Daraja - Tuti Island

Improving relevancy, reliability, understanding and distribution of whether and climate Information and service to vulnerable communities

Daraja - Tuti Island

The Sudan Meteorological Authority, in collaboration with the Sudan Urban Development Think Tank (SUDTT) and other partners, is proud to spotlight the DARAJA - Tuti Island Project. This initiative is a response to the compounded challenges faced by Tuti Island, including climate-induced Nile flooding, erosion, and recent armed conflicts. Through this project, we aim to enhance the resilience and disaster preparedness of the Tuti community by improving access to reliable, understandable, and actionable weather and climate information. Utilizing traditional knowledge and new technologies, the project fosters community-led responses to weather-related risks, underlining our commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities and promoting sustainable urban development.

The project's innovative approach to weather and climate information dissemination, developed in partnership with Resurgence and the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), exemplifies the power of collaboration in crisis response. By bridging the gap between meteorological experts, local media, and the community, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for long-term resilience. The initiative aligns with the Sudan Meteorological Authority's mission to provide timely and effective early warnings, demonstrating our dedication to leveraging local and regional expertise in safeguarding the lives, livelihoods, and heritage of Sudanese communities against the backdrop of changing climates and ongoing conflict.

Enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of Tuti community in the face of weather-related risks and disasters

Enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of Tuti community in the face of weather-related risks and disasters

Through enhancing the preparedness and response capabilities of the Tuti Island community to weather-related risks and disasters, we aim at empowering residents with the necessary knowledge and tools to build a resilient community capable of protecting lives, homes, and livelihoods against the ever-present challenges of climate change.

Identify key stakeholders, assess capacities and develop operational partnerships to provide accurate, timely, relevant and actionable understanding of Weather and Climate information to Tuti community

To realize the second objective of identifying key stakeholders and building operational partnerships, our focus will extend towards mapping out and engaging with various entities crucial to the weather and climate information dissemination process. This includes meteorological experts, local media, and community leaders, ensuring Tuti's residents receive accurate and timely information tailored to their needs.

Map and assess the vulnerabilities within the information ecosystems for weather and climate information and early warning, and adopt a dynamic non-linear approach to information diffusion, dissemination channels and feedback loops

Map and assess the vulnerabilities within the information ecosystems for weather and climate information and early warning, and adopt a dynamic non-linear approach to information diffusion, dissemination channels and feedback loops

We are dedicated to comprehensively map and evaluate the vulnerabilities within our weather and climate information systems. By adopting a dynamic, adaptable approach, we will innovate our dissemination and feedback processes to ensure our community not only receives but effectively utilizes early warnings and climate insights for enhanced resilience.
