Sudan Meteorological Authority GHACOF 66 Highlights

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the Sudan Meteorological Authority (SMA) and representatives from various sectors in Sudan participated in the 66th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF66) held at Speke Munyonyo, Uganda from 20-21 February 2024. Despite the challenging circumstances, the commitment to providing essential climate services and weather information remains unwavering.

Dr. Guleid Artan, the Director of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), announced the March to May 2024( MAM 2024) Forecast which indicates a notable expectation for El-nino conditions: "Wetter than normal conditions are predicted for most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa," while for Sudan, it is dry and hot season preceding the main rain season from June to September. Additionally, the forecast predicts warmer than normal conditions, with higher probabilities of extreme temperatures anticipated specifically for Sudan.


During GHACOF66, Mrs. Hanan Rabbah the General Director and PR of Sudan with WMO underscored the challenges Sudan faces in generating national forecasts, appreciating the significance of regional forecasts from ICPAC for the relevant sectors in Sudan. "For Sudan, the regional forecasts are crucial, considering the current situation where our capacity to produce national forecasts is limited. Our role as the Meteorological Office to share this information will ensure that it is effectively utilized for decision-making." This acknowledgment demonstrates Sudan's practical approach, and recognition of the importance of collaborative regional efforts in improving decision-making processes, especially amid conflict.

Since the start of the Conflict on 15 April 2023, the Sudan Meteorological Authority has not been immune to the disruptions caused by conflict, but has rescued climate services and continues to provide daily weather forecasts to the general public. This resilience showcases the dedication of the Sudan Meteorological Authority and other sectors in ensuring the availability of crucial weather and climate information, even in the face of adversity.

GHACOF 66 serves as a platform for regional cooperation, emphasizing the interconnectedness of climate challenges and the collective responsibility to address them. Sudan's active participation in the forum reflects a commitment to overcoming obstacles and prioritizing the dissemination of vital weather and climate information for the well-being of its citizens.
