Yesterday, the Sudanese team, hosted at the ICPAC center under the APIS - Early Warning and Civil Protection for Floods and Droughts in Sudan project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, met with H.E. Hanna Tetteh, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, at ICPAC’s offices. This meeting was part of her visit to the center, which focused on highlighting the critical role of climate change as a conflict driver in the Horn of Africa and the urgent need for climate adaptation and mitigation through climate services and early warning systems.

Ms. Tetteh commended ICPAC for hosting the Sudan Meteorological Authority (SMA) team and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the interconnected challenges of conflict and security in the region. Representing the Sudanese expert team, which includes members from SMA, the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Council of Civil Defense, and HAC, meteorological expert Mrs. Dalal Homoudi, who specializes in impact-based forecasting, briefed Ms. Tetteh on the team's services, the challenges they face in sustaining these services, and their critical role in reducing and mitigating potential risks, particularly through early warning systems.

Mrs. Dalal expressed her gratitude to ICPAC for their hospitality and support in facilitating these services. She also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Italian organization, CIMA Research Foundation, a key partner of the project, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the project's funder. Furthermore, she thanked NORCAP for providing the necessary expertise. During her presentation, she showcased examples of the products the team provides to the Sudanese community, highlighting the project's ultimate goal of serving the public.
She further emphasized that Sudan's hopes and aspirations are firmly anchored in the successful integration of the country into regional and global funding initiatives, particularly those dedicated to supporting comprehensive early warning systems for all. These initiatives not only strengthen Sudan’s capacity for climate resilience but also play a vital role in fostering rehabilitation and recovery efforts in response to climate-related challenges.
Mrs. Dalal also expressed heartfelt gratitude to pivotal organizations like The Water at the Heart of Climate Action (WHCA) and the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) project, among others, for their unwavering support. Their continued collaboration has been instrumental in advancing Sudan’s progress in climate adaptation and ensuring the sustainability of critical infrastructure and communities.
