Based on the forecasts of the Climate Forecasting Center and the estimates of the Sudanese Meteorological Authority's Early Warning Unit, heavy rainfall is expected during the period (31 July - 7 August 2024) in many areas of Sudan in the coming days, accompanied by sudden floods and flash floods that may lead to damage to property, road closures, and threats to lives. The forecasts indicate that these rains will particularly affect the following states: • East: Kassala, Gedaref, Sennar, and the southern part of the Red Sea state • Center: Gezira, Khartoum, and the central and northern parts of the White Nile state • North: Southern parts of the Nile River state and the Northern state • West: Northern parts of North Kordofan state, western and central parts of North Darfur state, and northern parts of West Darfur state Heavy rainfall is also expected on the Eritrean plateau, which may cause flooding of the Gash River. Therefore, we urge the relevant authorities to raise the level of preparedness and alertness to mitigate potential risks.
